Patent Published

  • Dr.D.Shoba Rajkumar is the inventor for the Patent filed in the name of "Government College of Engineering, Salem" on 12.4.2016 with the title of invention

"Ferrocement panels with scissel reinforcement and method of making them" under Application No.: 201641012757 and Applicant Name : Government College of Engineering, Salem.

  • First Examination report received on 17.1.2021.
  • Reply for FER was filed on 16.7.2021.

Product Innovation

  • Dr.D.Shoba Rajkumar has found a solution for the disposal of sludge waste in the manufacture of fumed silica by Cabot Sanmar Ltd. Mettur.
  • She had guided a batch of 4 students and came out with the solution that the fumed silica sludge could be used in the manufacture of bricks.
  • The Industrial waste, fumed silica sludge after neutralization with lime to a pH of 7, was mixed with fly ash, lime, cement, crusher sand and water in suitable proportions for manufacturing bricks.
  • Bricks of size 230mmx105mmx70mm were cast, air dried and tested on a compression testing machine in the laboratory.
  • On testing it was found that fumed silica sludge bricks showed higher strength when compared with the conventional fly ash bricks.
  • The bricks were also found to satisfy the requirements of other tests such as water absorption, soundness test and efflorescence test.
  • Manufacture of bricks from fumed silica sludge is novel and eco friendly. These bricks are light in weight and hence can be used with ease for construction work.
  • This work has been selected as an innovative project work from the Department of Civil Engineering for the year 2020-2021 by the institution.

Transfer of Technology

  1. Dr.D.Shoba Rajkumar has contributed towards transfer of Technology for the rural development.
    • She has constructed two Ferrocement water tanks in Saminaickenpatty village opposite to Government College of Engineering, Salem.
    • The ferrocement technology and method of construction of water tanks was demonstrated to the villagers so that they could learn the skill of constructing water tanks for their own houses at a very affordable cost with less consumption of construction materials.
    • The advantage of using ferrocement is that development and propagation of cracks can be minimised in the structure and it proves to be an excellent material for the construction of water tanks.
    • The rich cement mortar does not allow water to penetrate through the wall thickness of the tank with steel mesh reinforcement incorporated within to enhance the tensile strength of the material.
  2. Dr.D.Shoba Rajkumar has constructed a ferrocement fountain structure infront of the Department of Civil Engineering.
    • This construction imparts knowledge to the students that ferrocement is not only to be used as a decorative material but can also be used to build structures with good strength aspects.
    • This structure depicts one of the biggest application of ferrocement.
    • The construction technique has been taught to the students and this serves to transfer of technology to the students, construction industry and the society.
    • The construction of the ferrocement fountain structure has been published in the February issue 2021 of the Ferrocement News Bulletin by the Ferrocement Society of India.
  3. Dr.D.Shoba Rajkumar has constructed the Hexa-Petalled ferrocement roof structure in front of the Department of Civil Engineering for the benefit of students to gain knowledge in various types of construction methods and available construction materials.
    • The hexa-petalled ferrocement roof structure was constructed to impart knowledge to students in the field of ferrocement technology.
    • This innovative structure comprising of six petalled flower like roof with bent columns that makes it elegant was constructed as a part of M.E. Structural Engineering thesis by Ms.G.Manjula under the guidance of Dr.D.ShobaRajkumar in the year 2015.
    • The advantages of ferrocement construction technique are that the structure is crack resistant due to the presence of steel mesh and possess water tightness as it is constructed of rich cement mortar.
    • Also this type of construction requires less quantity of construction materials which directly reduces the cost of construction.
    • The Hexa-Petalled Ferrocement Roof Structure has now found its place globally in the “WRD handbook of Ferrocement Technology” published by Water Resources Department, Government of Maharashtra, India.
    • Link: www.ferrocementsociety.com WRD handbook on Ferrocement Technology (pg.No.35).
